Sapphire Orifices Jewel & Ruby Orifice Jewel
ring-jewel-bearing
  • Extremely hard, strong and wear resistant
  • Excellent thermal conductivity/heat resistance
  • Exceptionalchemical stability
  • Excellent transmission bandwidths (UV to IR)
  • Blank substrates, AR-coated pieces, and precision windows are available
  • Sapphire and Ruby are excellent orifice jewel materials due to its high hardness, high strength, scratch resistance, high temperature resistance, as well as low coefficient of friction.

Typical Applications of sapphire orifice includes Precision flow control - gases or liquids, Accurate timing in pneumatic or hydraulic circuits, Pressure dividing circuits and pneumatic resistance bridges, and Impedance matching.

Sapphire Orifices Jewels & Ruby Orifice Jewels

Sapphire and Ruby are excellent orifice jewel materials because of their resistance to wear, heat and corrosion, as well as low friction. Ruby makes an ideal jewel orifice for a similar reason. The hole diameter for control purposes is usually specified to be held within 0.0002”. Sapphire orifices and ruby orifice jewels can be used for UHP water jet applications (up to 40,000-50,000 PSI), oil atomizing and the handling of air, hot gases and practically all liquids and acids.

    Sapphire Orifices Corundum Orifice Material

Although Orifices are most ideal for waterjet cutting and cleaning applications, ruby and sapphire remain a commonly used orifice material. While ruby and sapphire, also known as corundum, are still heavily utilized today for non-critical applications, due to their inherent material characteristics they do not hold up well to impacts from on/off cycles, metal debris from high pressure lines, or abrasive particles that collide with the orifice edges. Any of these impacts can render the jewel useless in an instant. It takes only one impact on the inlet edge of a ruby or sapphire to chip it, causing jet stream quality failure. For these reasons, we almost always recommend upgrading to a higher quality diamond orifice material. Customers that make the switch typically never switch back due to significant increases in their productivity and bottomline.
